The Saints need a complete defensive overhaul in 2009. A new defensive coordinator, defensive backs, linebackers (Fujita and Vilma can stay), and defensive ends (McCray stays).

willsmithrunning.thumbnail Smith and Grant are gone in 2009?Will Smith has not been productive at all this year. On Sunday, he over-ran a simple containment play that resulted in Michael Turner gaining 20 yards on third down. In addition to that, he was penalized for an offsides play AGAIN that allowed the Falcons to continue a drive. Smith has allowed critical drives to continue in the Redskins, Denver, Vikings and Falcons games this year. Bonehead plays. Maybe it is the masking agent affecting his play? Smith and Grant have definitely been good players in the past, but they have not fulfilled their end of the high-dollar contracts they signed these past two years.

Smith and Grant have a combined 58 Tackles and 5 sacks in 2008. The entire team has 14 sacks in 9 games. Grant is out due to injury and Smith may be on his way due to a violation of the NFL’s drug policy. McCray has outperformed both of his fellow defensive ends. What is odd about the situation, the Saints haven’t attempted to sign an additional body to shore up the ends. Rice and KGB are two of the bigger names that are still available. What’s the hold up? Only Payton and Loomis knows for sure.

It will very difficult to take the cap hits on Smith and Grant, but maybe Smith may help the Saints if a trade is discussed. 2008 is coming to an end, unfortunately, two of the Saints highest paid players stint with them may be ending as well.
