MVP or MIP – Who is more Important?
For the New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees may be the Most Valuable Player, but Reggie Bush’s absence (due to injury), has proven he is their Most Important Player. Without any doubt, Brees’ performance is outstanding in the Saints offensive scheme. However, Reggie Bush is indeed the centerpiece of the team’s offensive attack. The Saints appeared lost without Bush. Payton appeared lost. A lost sense of identity. They lacked a sense of purpose. Why is it so and how can this be true?
Last year, Deuce McAllister’s absence left the Saints’ “playoff dreams” in doubt. Reggie steps in and the spotlight shined. However, this was also when the microscopes of the critics and defensive coaches were used to dissect Reggie and the Saints attack. Defenses keyed in on Bush and Bush alone. Without a Deuce and running game, the one-dimensional Saints were easy to figure out. Reggie and the Saints were like ants under a magnifying glass. He performed adequately, but, then the PCL injury caused him to miss the final 4 games. And in his absence, the Saints’ playoff hopes were silenced.
This year, Deuce returns, Reggie is healthy, and Drew was ready to guide the Saints to the playoffs. Then in Carolina and Reggie freakishly gets injured on a punt return before halftime. The offense came out of halftime flat and lacked the sizzle that Bush provided. The Saints lost. They responded well in London, but they still looked one dimensional and almost lost the game to the Chargers in the last seconds.
The Falcons took advantage of the Saints on Sunday. They had the speed, smart play and a desire to win over a divisional opponent; all of the ingredients for a Saints disaster. However, Brees and the offense were able to move the ball, but still, something was missing. A missing ingredient that makes Payton’s schemes more delectable and jazzy. A missing ingredient that gives the team hope that a big play is on the horizon.
Let me explain this is Creole and Cajun terminology. It was like a Gumbo without the roux (the thickening agent). You need the roux as your base in the Gumbo; and Reggie is definitely the roux for the Saints. He binds the offense together and gets it rolling. That is what the most important player is about. Like it or not Saints fans, but this is why Reggie Bush is the Saints’ Most Important Player!
